kids that he was Sweedish. He was short and fat.He was always good natured it
seemed to me as a child, and he loved every one, He had blue eyes and grey hair,
he died in Joplin, Jasper Mo. on Jan 7, 1942. He was married to Lourena Elgin
and when they divorced he remarried. I didn"t know her first
name, she was just Grand ma Johnston. A very loving and sweet lady. By Mildred

John M. Johnston, 74,dies at home here. John Monroe Johnston, 74 years old,
died at 8:20 o'clock yesterday morning at his home,3125 East Tenth Street. He
formerly was employed as a truck driver for the Joplin Cement Company, but retired
several years ago. He had lived in Joplin 43 years. Surviving are two sons, Floyd
Johnston of Joplin and Ben Johnston of Senaca; a brother, Ike Johnston of Sallisaw,
Ok. and 15 grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be
conducted by the Rev. Warren . Moore at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the
Lanpher Chapel. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. "

Nephritis. She was a very good cook even tho she had to cook outside on a
make shift Barbuce pit. Mildred was not around her very much as Rosella Davee
her other grandmother did not like Lourina and would not allow Mildred to go
see Lourina very often. Lourina was born in Missouri
on Oct. 15 1868.She married John Monroe Johnston about 1886. She divorced John
and married Hicks ,We all called her granny Hicks.She was very poor with very
little food nor furniture. But she kept her little one room cabin clean and neat
. She had beautiful quilts that she had sewn by hand herself. When she died
in Joplin, Jasper, Mo. April 13 1948, Her son had it put on her death certificate

Lurena Hicks, Joplin Resident 50 years, dies. Mrs. Lurena Hicks, 79 years old,
2524 Manitou avenue, died at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon in a nursing home
at 1809 Grand avenue. Mrs. Hicks born in Buffalo, Mo. had been a resident of
Joplin 50 years. She was a member of the Christian church. Survivers are two
sons , Floyd L. Johnston, route 4 , and Ben Johnston, 305 St Louis avenue ; a
sister Mrs Myron Herron of Los Angeles; two brothers, Allen Elgin of Washburn,
Mo., and Marsh Elgin of Kansas City; 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
The body was received by the Parker-Hunsaker mortuary."

Hicks Rites To Be This Afternoon ----Funeral sevices for Mrs Lorene Hicks,
79 years old, who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon
at the Parker-Hunsaker chapel by the Rev. Thurman Kelly. Buriel will be in Forest
Park cemetery. The body will lie in state at the chapel. Pallbearers, grandsons,
will be Carl, Ralph, Richard,Everett and James Johnston and Albert Lanes. Mrs
Hicks resided at 2524 Manitou avenue. She died in a nursing home at 1809 Grand
avenue. She had been a Joplin resident for 50 years."
